The herringbone, kept slim. Sections of oiled mango set by hand into a soft herringbone along a narrow 60 × 16 cm board — paler and quieter than our bold chevron paddle, a pattern that hums rather than shouts. The warm tone and figure do the decorating; the food just sits in it and looks better for it.

The length is the point: cheese and crackers at one end, figs, grapes and cured meats running down to the other. A turned handle and jute loop mean it hangs as easily as it serves.
